Safe Access Platform Systems for Safe Work Standards

Blog | September 14th, 2018

If you’ve ever walked onto a construction site, you know how important it is for safety to remain a priority. Every aspect of a construction job is focused on getting the work done right without sacrificing any aspect of safety during the job. While we understand the role that safety regulations play, we often don’t extend that thought to the work being done on the access platform systems that are so often used. Today, we are going to take some time in order to talk about how proper safety access platform systems can help elevate the work standards of your construction site while improving the quality of your work, as well.

Importance of Safe Access Platform Systems

Going off of our vision of a construction site, think back to the last time that you saw one. No doubt you recall various platforms, pieces of large equipment, and rolling machinery. With workings buzzing about and a project to be constructed, there is a very real need for a variety of different access platforms. Most people don’t realise it, but access platforms come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as features. Let’s briefly look at a few of the more common access platform systems so that we can explain the importance of their safe use.

1) Stationary & Semi-Stationary Platforms – This is probably the first image that comes to mind when you visualise a construction job. stationary platforms are platforms that are erected and locked into place, standing tall like a tower around and inside of a project. Semi-stationary platforms are similar but can be moved according to needs.

2) Powered Platforms – This style of platform features a motor and engine that allows the platform to be moved in order to meet the demands of the project. From electric hoists to cherry pickers, these platforms are extremely versatile.

3) Folding Platforms – Finally, we have the mobile folding platform. These platforms are often used for painting, repairs, and routine construction. Typically, these systems are small enough to fit inside of a service truck.

With so many different kinds of platform systems available, safety takes absolute priority. What does this mean? Not only do the workers on your site need to meet regulatory standards, anyone who walks onto the property must be monitored when using the systems. Guardrails, lock-in and lock-out procedures, and clear communication are just the beginning of maintaining proper safe access platform systems while on the job.
